Cycling The Danube - Serbia

Adult Group Holidays Moderate Cycling Culture Prices reduced on some departures

A spectacular ride following the Danube through a region influenced by many different civilizations

Golubac Castle, Serbia

Serbia is a fascinating country where many cultures and religions overlap. There are Serbs, Croats, Hungarians, Romanians, Gypsies, Germans, and Bulgarians all living together in villages along the second longest river in Europe. The Danube flows for 590km through Serbia and we will cycle the most beautiful sections, meeting the locals and learning about their culture, music, food and wine en route. We start our ride in Apatin, a border town that has always been a crossroads of cultures. Here the wide river winds its way lazily through the Pannonian Plain past ancient fortresses and monasteries.

Later we reach a section known as the 'Iron Gate' where the mighty Danube is squeezed between near vertical cliffs that rise several hundred metres above the narrow river, with the dramatic 14th Century Golubac Fortress sitting high above. This is one of Europe's longest gorges and its waters are up to 90m deep, making it one of the deepest rivers on earth. We will also visit a traditional self-sufficient farm (salas) and sample local wines and honey. This really is a memorable region, perfect for cycling.
